It feels like an acknowledgement of what we intended right from the start to create a community space full of a whole lot of love!!

I had this great reminder this week from FB – of a call out I wrote 7 years ago –

“Calling all creative artists, artisans, conscious creators… new shop opening in up and coming area of Bermondsey St, London Bridge – will be a ‘fayre’ encompassing all arts from independent traders- some call these things a ‘lifestyle shop’ – if you have anything you like to sell- that is made with love-get in touch – it will begin with air of xmas market…. drop me a line…asap…”  and here we are nearly at our 7th birthday!!

It was so amazing to be reminded of the intention we sent out then and to know we are still sending out the same intention despite evolving in unexpected ways – with so many more creative artists than I could ever have imagined, promoting more and more ethical and sustainable fashion as well as gifts and creating a yoga community that just keeps growing!

On 2nd December 6-9pm we are celebrating our 7th Birthday and  I am so excited to share an evening with you all with discounts, bubbles and more unexpected elements yet to be confirmed!email me if you can to say you are coming along so I have an idea of numbers.. info@bermondseyfayre.com xx

Yoga, Retreats and Sunshine

Bermondsey Fayre teacher Liz Dillon has just been teaching Yoga in Dahab, Egypt.  Here are a couple of photos Yoga in the desert and by the sea and some reflections on the benefits and joys of teaching and being a part of a yoga retreat.

“It was such a wonderful experience with a fabulous group of students and the most beautiful setting.  I was hoping to bring back some sunshine to all of you but as yet it is still in transit!  Yoga retreats are a great opportunity for teacher as well as the students.  It isn’t often as a teacher we get the experience to work with the same bodies for 4/5 hours a day over 6 days.  It is the opportunity to introduce deeper awareness in the practise and also offer a more complete practise with the increased amount of time.   As teacher and students we can literally stretch ourselves further and the sunshine obviously helps in opening up our bodies and hearts.  Participants can choose to take part in as much or as little as they like and as always classes are very much tailored to who is in the class.

Over the week we practised meditations as well as the physical asanas (postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques).  We also had the time to practise more restorative yoga techniques promoting deeper and deeper relaxation and had some fun with partner work in various postures.  Students were of varying backgrounds and experiences, some with less experience of Hatha yoga and some at the level of teaching.  As always it really is the role of the teacher to make sure that all levels are catered for and everyone feels they are able to explore the postures at their own personal level.  It is particularly important that students who are new to the practise leave feeling confident and empowered in their practise.  Some days we took time to work on postures that students chose to look at further and other days we worked through creative sequences leading to peak poses.  We also had time to explore self practise and the blocks to practising at home.

Amidst the yoga there was plenty of relaxing in the sun, snorkelling in the red sea, sleeping in the desert under the stars and meeting a wonderful group of people to share our adventures with and life experiences.

One student coming on a yoga retreat for the first time fed back that she felt “We should all give the gift of a yoga retreat to ourselves at least once a each year” and compared it to the concept of how “we give and give until our jug is half empty and the retreat allows us to fill up our jug of personal reserves” to reenergise and come back home with more space in mind and body.

I definitely came back feeling inspired by the journey with the students both on and off the mat and blessed by the wonderful warm welcomes of all the Egyptian people we met.  My own personal yoga practise also feels like it has grown and my body feels stronger from practising each day in the heat and sunshine.

I will be running this retreat again next March in Dahab and before then I am running a retreat in Turkey with Nick Hughes – www.yogaastrologyretreats.com. It’s is my third time returning to Cirali Beach in Turkey – a most beautiful place where we will practise yoga amidst the lush green trees, close to the sea and meditate under the stars.  It is a wonderful time to visit Turkey as the sea has warmed up from the summer and is at the most beautiful temperature to spend hours in under the sparkling sun.  We even went for a night swim under the stars which was beautiful last October. If you would like any more info about this retreat do email me admin@yogaastrologyretreats.com or bermondseyfayre@gmail.com

“I thoroughly recommend practising yoga for a week in the sunshine as a gift for your body, mind and spirit”

Can Smells Improve Your Health? Zena Tuitt –

Can Smells Improve Your Health? Zena Tuitt

Take time to read this wonderful article by Zena Tuitt – inspired by her visit to Bermondsey Fayre

This week a colleague commented on my handcream. She loved the smell.  I watched as the smell brought a smile to her face and shifted her mood.  On Wednesday when I was feeling tired, I bought some incenses to lift my mood and help me relax.  I was walking pastBermondsey Fayre and smelt a beautiful aromatic smell that drew me into the shop. The gentleman behind the counter was burning ‘Om’ The Mother’s India Fragrances.  As soon as I smelt it I felt better.  The packaging is also beautiful and serendipitiously the smells I picked up were boxed in the colour of the pH logo? Fancy that?

Bermondsey Fayre on Bermondsey Street. One of pH favourite places to do Yoga and buy gifts in London. They have lovely staff and presents to wear, smell and see.

I am currently deepening my Afrikan Yoga practice and as part of my daily development, Pablo Imani has recommended seven essential oils – one for each day to optimise my health whether it is to stimulate the nervous system, purify the blood, cleanse the glands, aid digestion or relieve nasal congestion.

Do smells have a positive or non positive effect on your moods?

I know they definitely do on mine.  I won’t get too graphic but there are some smells that bring me joy and others that stir a shade of the anger emotion(if you have ever been on a packed tube or train during rush hour or merrily gone to the bathroom at work to be confronted by a smell that appears to have come from an alien source  – you’ll get my drift)

As well as eating well, keeping fit have you ever consider the effect of smells on your well-being?

Kate Fox, a social anthropologist from the Social Issues Research Centre has written a report called, The Smell Report: An Overview of Facts and Findings.  It makes a great nose twitching read.

She states:

The human nose is in fact the main organ of taste as well as smell. The so-called taste-buds on our tongues can only distinguish four qualities – sweet, sour, bitter and salt -all other ‘tastes’ are detected by the olfactory receptors high up in our nasal passages

Which proves the point that you only have to know what ‘s&*t smells like to know when something tastes like it!

The report is a fascinating read and also sheds some light on how emotions are connected to scents.  The report states:

The perception of smell consists not only of the sensation of the odours themselves but of the experiences and emotions associated with these sensations. Smells can evoke strong emotional reactions. In surveys on reactions to odours, responses show that many of our olfactory likes and dislikes are based purely on emotional associations. The association of fragrance and emotion is not an invention of poets or perfume-makers. Our olfactory receptors are directly connected to the limbic system, the most ancient and primitive part of the brain, which is thought to be the seat of emotion. Smell sensations are relayed to the cortex, where ‘cognitive’ recognition occurs, only after the deepest parts of our brains have been stimulated. Thus, by the time we correctly name a particular scent as, for example, ‘vanilla’ , the scent has already activated the limbic system, triggering more deep-seated emotional  responses.

Using Essential Oils in Aromatherapy to boost moods

If you need a mood boost, you can try shaking a couple drops of an essential oil onto a tissue and then inhaling the uplifting aroma. You can also use an aromatherapy diffuser to scent an entire room with your selected oil, or add a few drops of essential oil to your bath or massage oil.

Essential oils are so concentrated and potent, that even small amounts can be dangerous if used improperly. Never take essential oils internally, unless under the guidance of a health professional. Some essential oils (including lavender) can cause harmful drug interactions, so consult your doctor if you’re currently using any medication.

In the words of my new favourite incense makers ‘The Mother’s India Fragrances’…

Fragrances play an important role in our lives. We know that colours and music can influence the way we feel. Fragrances can do that too, but many of us are not aware of this. Some fragrances can make you feel calm, relaxed or contemplative, others can boost creativity or inspire activity. You can find out how different fragrances affect you and how you can use fragrances to support you in your daily activities.

Bermondsey Street Festival 2012

THANK YOU to everyone who came down to support us at the Bermondsey Street Festival.

We began the day with our regular yoga class and all of the students in head stands for the first time! An energising start to a wonderful day – preparing us all for the task of 108 sun salutations outside – in our Flash Mob Yoga.  It was a blast – lots of support from all and so many enthusiastic yogis! What a team – WELL DONE to you all and such spirit and laughter.

This was then followed by the wonderful Emporium of Tiny Voices – the dance piece that brought the items in the shop alive with recordings – with Jemma Bicknell and Lydia Fraser-Ward.  We hope to show this again in near future as was such a wonderful performance piece with the characters of the objects.

This was followed by our designers making their mark in the fashion show to cheers by our lovely Yoga Students and Teachers.

CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE!!

AND Big thank you to you all too

love LIz and Bermondsey Fayre crew x
